Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is a technology that lets an EV's battery not just charge, but also send energy back — to the home or to the electricity grid. The idea turns a parked EV from a passive consumer into an active energy resource.

How it works technically

Unlike standard one-way charging (AC/DC in), V2G requires a bidirectional charger and compatibility on the car's side. Energy stored in the battery is converted back from DC to AC and fed to the home (Vehicle-to-Home, V2H) or directly to the grid (Vehicle-to-Grid).

Practical benefits for owners

Balancing home consumption. With solar panels installed, an EV can store excess daytime energy and return it in the evening, reducing reliance on the grid during peak hours.

Backup power during outages. Some manufacturers already offer V2H functionality, letting the car power essential home appliances during a power cut.

Potential income from the grid. In some European countries with pilot programs, owners of V2G-compatible cars can sell energy back to the grid during high-tariff peak periods.

Why the technology isn't mainstream yet

Limited car compatibility. Only a fraction of models on the market support bidirectional charging at the hardware level — most mainstream models still don't offer it.

Expensive bidirectional chargers. Equipment that supports V2G/V2H is significantly more expensive than a standard home wallbox.

Regulatory uncertainty. Rules for selling energy back to the grid from private individuals are still being formed in most European countries, including Bulgaria.

Battery degradation concerns. The extra charge/discharge cycles can accelerate battery wear, though manufacturers claim smart management minimizes the effect.

V2G is a real, working technology, but its mainstream adoption depends on cheaper hardware, more compatible models, and clear regulation. For buyers planning a purchase now, V2G/V2H compatibility is a good bonus for the future, but not a decisive factor today.
